The Hounds of the Morrigan Pat O'Shea Books

I read this book when I was in fourth grade, and I adored it. Some stories stay with you forever, and this is one of them. The imagery is so rich, and I love this take on the Morrigan's triple Goddess aspect. If you like The Dark is Rising books, you will LOVE this one. It's a classic take of good vs evil, with a brother and sister who will do whatever it takes to make sure that light prevails.

The Hounds of the Morrigan Pat O'Shea Books Reviews

Read this to my son when he was 8 or 9 and he's never forgotten this book. He loved it so much it fell apart and I just bought him another copy that he is in the middle of reading.
A wonderful book that everyone should have and read. Literally fun for all ages.
Daughters name so had to give it a chance. she loved it she is a avid reader!!! and it helps if it is a great story and is a bout magic and thing like that. younger readers will love it!!!
One of the best YA fantasies to date, fully up there with Susan Cooper and Alan Garner- and the book is somewhat evocative of both authors.

Not just for kids, I suggest this for adults who want something as a bedtime read.

I have one issue with the author- apparently this is her only major work, and I want more!
Over a lifetime, Pat O'Shea mined the deep lore of Ireland to create a lyrical fantasy with rich characters and luminous landscapes. Two children, caught up in a struggle between peculiarly Gaelic forces of good and evil, bring a sense of wonder to the tale without ever being precious or cute. This book has some of the funniest scenes I've ever read and some of the most moving, from Pudden'een Whelan the watchfrog to the bereft Queen Maeve.

Pidge finds a manuscript holding the spellbound serpent cast out by St. Patrick and is enlisted with his little sister to prevent the trinity of war goddesses, the Morrigan, from obtaining the blood-marked stone that would release the serpent and restore the Morrigan to full power. The children wander through a Faerie mirror of the countryside near Galway, encountering magical creatures, characters out of myth, and the traps and hounds of the goddess.

This is a story to own and reread and savor.
I really love that there's a children's book that incorporates the old Irish tales so thoughtfully. From start to finish I enjoyed this book.
Really don't care for the one-word descriptors they as to categorize the book into because it is a not a simple tale. O'Shea worked a long time and did a magnificent job of incorporating mythos into the story. Without spoiling any of the fun, I would say that this is one story that is excellent to share with your children. My elementary and middle-school aged children read it and loved it, just as I did when I was young. The main protagonist of the story is a young boy named Pidge and he and his sister Bridget embark on a wondrous adventure where both Bridget's childlike innocence and Pidge's fledgling grasp on maturity are put to use in a race against darkness. The only unfortunate aspect of the book is that fact is was suppose to the first of a trilogy that the O'Shea was sadly unable to complete.
