The book opens with Emily leaving her home and life. The following chapters alternate between slowly revealing the past she is trying so hard to forget and the daily struggles of her new life.

This very well told story kept me guessing until the very end. When the big secret was finally revealed, it was not at all what I expected. It made me see Emily's actions and decisions in a completely new light.

Even though the book was fairly short, nothing was missing. The characters and plot were both well developed. There was a lot packed into those 286 pages.

I would definitely recommend this book.

The storyline did reel me in more and more as I read but when "Cats" secret was finally revealed the details were so horrific that I couldn't read them...had to scan through to get to the end. Would not recommend this unless someone enjoys depressing books!
A wonderful book that makes you ask "why? why? why?" like a four-year-old. Emily runs away from her husband Ben and Charlie. Why? We don't find out right away. She goes to London, changes her name to Cat, finds a place to live and a job.

Different points-of-view are given chapter by chapter. We see the mother's difficult day of birth and her shock that it is twins. We follow the philandering father that same day. We understand why Emily's identical twin sister Caroline becomes the "evil" twin. We watch their upbringing. We also learn a bit about other people Emily/Cat meets. We see what happens the day Emily and Ben marry.

This book has everything twists and turns, twins - good and evil, envy, pregnancies, adultery. And above all, a delicious mystery goes throughout, we keep asking why? Why did Emily leave home? Yes, we do find out why; I was stunned when I found out, but I won't tell you here.

While reading the book, I had a hard time remembering the title "One Step Too Far". When I finished, I had an a-ha moment, and the title makes absolutely perfect sense.

One Step Too Far is not just a good novel, it is layered and complex and if I had to put it in a single phrase, I would say it is written in a major and minor key. By the way, I did not guess the plot twist either. But I do have to say that I felt it as I was reading. This is to say it is perfectly written, because it made me want to go back and read the book again in order to see how it unfolded and to see how it had led me to feel the plot twist and yet not to fully grasp it. It is not really a plot twist, in my estimation, since the novel is largely in the first person. I think it is more like a narrative device, and one well executed.

The story is the minor key and it is a gripping tale, one in which each chapter has a Dickensian sort of cliffhanger feeling that makes the reader want to forge ahead. I also note that the protagonist claims to read the classics and I can believe of this of the author too. The book is just simply that well written. The novel, its protagonist, and I presume, the author, are all morally and psychologically complex, as is life, but which also is not often the case with popular literature. I can sense Hardy, Brontë, James and others in the telling of this tale.

Freud explains ambivalence as the way in which we also hate or resent the things and people that we love. Shakespeare illustrates a more comprehensive understanding, which I believe is that our ambivalence toward the people and things we love is generated by our ambivalent feelings toward ourselves. This book's major key is that it offers a nuanced and insightful demonstration of each of these ways of being ambivalent, and of other psychological complexities.

It is a thought-provoking novel, as well as a very good yarn.
Here's a novelist who knows how to create suspense and tease the reader to keep going. While at times I wondered if I was reading trash, I couldn't resist, and so waded into a confusion of emotions that stemmed from twinship. It is the theme of twins - unwelcome twins -- that forms the basis of plot.

A woman leaves her husband and son, we know not why. She finds her way to London and begins a new life in a house of down-and-outers, but finds a job. This woman has been a lawyer. She poses as a receptionist, and works her way up, until she is living the high life as an executive in an ad agency. However, she is tied through gratitude to a flatmate who works in a casino. This woman shoplifts. She uses cocaine. She sleeps around. Soon the errant housewife is following her example. Still, we don't know why. And then something even more terrible happens.

Alternating points of view and flashbacks stagger on to a climax and somewhat satisfying understanding of just what has happened here. The entire effort leaves one exhausted, but still fascinated by the likelihood of these circumstances.

One has to admire the precision with which Seskis describes the fragile happiness of a contemporary English housewife, whose purpose, in one swift moment of inattention, becomes diverted from a life of comfort and presumed fulfillment to a matter of individual survival. Seskis is a gifted writer. Her prose is exact and original. The underlying themes are a bit weird.
I have to say it took me quite a while to get info this book and finish it. But once I was about half way I really started to get invested in the story and the main character. I really loved the many twists in this book and was honestly shocked by more than one of them. I find it is usually hard to surprise me in a novel but I can say this one really did. The author writes about grief so beautifully it really makes you feel the emotions as your own. The last half of the book really saved the whole story for me and would recommend.
